Not to put too fine a point on things but, Kipling was born in Bombay and was a citizen of the British Empire. Not one of "our great authors." That said I do agree that much of his work was outstanding. If a young man has not been given at a minimum The Jungle Book and Kim to read by the time he's twelve his education and recreation is not being properly overseen.
