Russell's attorney files motion for change of venue

Paperwork has been filed in Whitman County Superior
Court asking that Frederick Russell’s trial on charges
of vehicular homicide be moved outside of Whitman
County.

Russell’s attorney, Francisco Duarte, filed pretrial
motions Friday requesting the change of venue, arguing
that extensive media coverage of Russell’s case makes
it unlikely that “prospective jurors could lay aside
their impressions or opinions and render a verdict
solely based on the evidence presented in court”

Russell fled the country in October 2001 shortly
before the start of his trial for vehicular homicide
and vehicular assault, stemming from a June 4, 2001
car crash on the Pullman-Moscow Highway that killed
three Washington State University students and injured
four other people.

Russell lived and worked under an assumed name in
Dublin until his capture in October 2005. He fought
extradition, including applying for political asylum,
but was brought back to the United States by U.S.
marshals after Irish courts rejected his attempts to
remain.

Russell has been held without bail at the Whitman
County Jail since being returned to the United States
on Nov. 9.
