Dear Friends,

Next week, the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival celebrates a
milestone - its 40th anniversary. The festival has grown from a one-day
event that featured one guest artist in 1968, to a four-day extravaganza
that features more than 50 jazz artists and attracts thousands of visitors
to campus. This year, the festival also welcomes incoming artistic director
John Clayton, a six-time Grammy Award-nominated bassist, composer, arranger
and conductor. 
 
The festival brings distinction to the University of Idaho and provides
opportunities to highlight our tremendously talented Lionel Hampton School
of Music students and faculty. Some of those students will be featured at
the Hamp's Gala concert next Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Administration
Auditorium. The International Jazz Collections also is presenting a film and
lecture series on "Jazz in Europe," and displaying items from the
collections at locations across campus. You also can visit the IJC office in
their new location in the Library here in Moscow.

This year we also will honor Lynn "Doc" Skinner for his 31-year leadership
of the festival prior to his recent retirement. With vision and tenacity,
this guiding force helped create an internationally recognized jazz festival
that stands alone for its emphasis on educating young musicians about the
history and impact of jazz. There will be a number of tributes to Doc in
Moscow next week. See below for details, including ticket information.

I hope many of you are able to take part, and take pride, in the jazz
festival's 40th anniversary.

Here's the latest news from the University of Idaho:

Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival tickets can be purchased at the
event or online. See www.jazz.uidaho.edu for details. The Doc Skinner
Community Appreciation Party will be held on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at the
Prichard Art Gallery in Moscow and across the street in the Hoffman
Building. The cost for jazz festival ticket holders is $7 and for non-ticket
holders is $10. Tickets are available at the door. 

Jack Morris, dean of the College of Business and Economics, will make a
presentation at the Boise Business Breakfast on Friday, Feb. 23. His talk,
"Exploring Market Solutions to Climate Change: An Opportunity for the
University of Idaho," will address executive level education, among other
topics.  Open to the public, the breakfast event will be held from 7:30-8:30
a.m. MT at the Owyhee Plaza, 1109 Main Street in Boise. 

The University of Idaho and North Idaho College will offer joint admissions
beginning summer semester 2007. Under the new agreement, students may apply
simultaneously to both institutions, lock into a set of degree requirements
that are not subject to consequent program changes, gain access to academic
advisers from both schools and measure their progress toward degree
completion with periodic, cross-institutional degree audits. The agreement
saves students time, money and the frustration of accumulating course
credits that do not transfer across institutions or toward their desired
degree.

The College of Law offers a multi-faceted legal analysis of the battle
between timber industries in the U.S. and Canada over the sale of Canadian
softwood lumber. The issue is spotlighted in the 2007 International Law
Symposium "Free Trade or Fair: The Softwood Lumber Dispute and Beyond." 
The lengthy conflict has centered on U.S. concerns that Canada's timber
industry enjoyed an unfair advantage because Canadian timber largely is
harvested from public lands, allowing them to sell at below-market rates.
The event at the Coeur d'Alene Resort, March 1-3, will be highlighted by
addresses from Frank J. Garcia, professor of International and Comparative
Law at Boston College, and Idaho U.S. Senator Larry Craig. For more
