A Zoning Summit will be held on Thursday, November 9, 2006, from 7:00
PM to 9:30 PM in the Silver Room of the Best Western in Moscow,
Idaho. The purpose of the workshop is to discuss different
approaches to managing development and to form a consensus as to
which system the participants prefer. The results will be presented
to the Moscow City Council for consideration during the upcoming
rewrite of the Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Code.
The summit is sponsored by area community members, initiated by
Moscow resident Kit Craine, and led by facilitators from the Palouse
Center for Conflict Management, Inc., a community mediation center.
It will briefly explain different philosophies for managing growth
and the types of zoning codes which are used to implement them.
Following the presentations, smaller groups will discuss what
Moscow’s ideal system would be for three types of development: 1)
breaking new ground (e.g., a farm newly annexed for a use), 2)
revitalization (e.g., the abandoned railroad/grain elevator area
between Third and Sixth Streets in Moscow), and 3) infill (e.g.,
splitting large lots in established neighborhoods). The workshop is
free and open to the public. Interested community members are
encouraged to attend, learn about zoning systems, and provide
feedback about what zoning system they would prefer Moscow to have.
Since this is sponsored by the community, sponsorship donations are
being sought from organizations and individuals. If anyone cares to
contribute to this effort:
- Checks should be made out to: Palouse Center for Conflict
Management, Inc.
- Please send checks to me at 626 Kenneth, Moscow ID 83843 by
Monday, November 6, 2006.
