I'd like to share a press release about a program
specifically designed to address poverty in rural
Idaho through capacity building and leadership
development.
14 Rural Northern Idaho Communities Selected for
Horizons
UI Extension Mobilizes Resources to Strengthen Rural
Communities
Fourteen northern Idaho communities have been selected
to participate in the Horizons program, a long-term
partnership between the University of Idaho and the
Minnesota-based Northwest Area Foundation. The
Horizons program is designed to empower citizens to
make rural Idaho a place where everyone has the
opportunity to thrive.
Over the next 20 months, Idaho Horizons communities
will participate in a series of community
conversations to develop greater awareness and
understanding of poverty, in-depth community
leadership training, and a powerful community
visioning and action process. This training and
support will be provided by University of Idaho
Extension, a Horizons project partner with the
Northwest Area Foundation.
Horizons communities have between 100 and 5000
residents and a poverty rate of 10 percent or greater
as reported in the 2000 Census. Idaho Horizons
communities are Bonners Ferry, Bovill, Cascade, Coeur
dAlene Reservation (Plummer, Worley, Tensed, Desmet),
Cottonwood, Grangeville, Kendrick/Juliaetta, Kooskia,
Riggins, Silver Valley (Kellogg, Pinehurst, Wardner,
Smelterville), St. Maries, Stites, Troy, and Upriver
(Fernwood, Santa, Emida). Each town will have a
community coach to help guide them through the process
and provide ongoing support for the communitys goals.
For more information about the Horizons program,
please contact Debbie Gray, 208-885-4017,

For specific information about the Horizons program in
Troy, Kendrick/Juliaetta and Bovill, please contact
their community coach, Pat Eck, preck at turbonet.com.
