The Friday Letter
A Newsletter for University of Idaho Alumni and Friends Nov. 3, 2006

Dear Friends,

Innovative state-of-the-art laboratory equipment enables high-achieving
students, faculty and staff to discover new knowledge that in turn produces
internationally recognized achievements that may improve our lives. These
remarkable tools are indeed expensive, and our ability to purchase them
occurs as a result of important partnerships with private foundations and
government agencies.

The DeVlieg Foundation has given the University $32,000 to purchase a new
instrument that will improve diagnostic testing for viruses and diseases
harmful to Idaho's plant and animal species. It will be housed in the
Laboratory for Ecological and Conservation Genetics, and used by researchers
working on plant viruses carried by aphids, and by undergraduate student
Charlotte Scofield in her study of diseases of pygmy rabbits. The
instrument, which gives an accurate measure of how much of a particular DNA
is present in a plant or animal, also may aid Idaho research on vaccine
development for coldwater disease in trout and salmon.

Earlier this fall, the University received a $527,000 grant from the
National Science Foundation's Major Research Instrumentation program for an
innovative microscope and spectroscopy system. It will be the only one of
its kind in the Northwest, and among only a handful in the world that can
view images roughly 10,000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair.
The microscope will support the University's strategic research initiative
in the biological applications of nanotechnology.
It also meets the rapidly increasing need to study increasingly smaller bits
of materials to advance science and technology in the areas of biomedical
engineering, microelectronics, environmental remediation, advanced energy
and fuels, and low-level chemical detection. The microscope should be in
place by summer.

These incredible tools redefine the opportunities available to our students,
faculty and staff, and further the spirit of innovation and discovery at the
University of Idaho. We are grateful for, and indebted to, our partners for
providing these new opportunities.

Here's the latest news from the University of Idaho:

The Idaho Assistive Technology Project at the University of Idaho's Center
on Disabilities and Human Development has been awarded a three-year,
$549,807 grant to get assistive devices to the people who need them most.
The grant from U.S. Department of Education's Rehabilitation Services
Administration will significantly expand the existing reuse program of items
such as walkers, adaptive computer hardware and software, reachers and other
devices that maintain or improve the functional capability of individuals
with disabilities. For more information or to participate in the used
equipment program, contact the Idaho Assistive Technology Project at
800-432-8324 or visit www.idahoat.org.

The University of Idaho is honoring military personnel by inviting them to
attend the annual Armed Services Appreciation Day free of charge, as the
Vandals host the University of Nevada. A variety of military equipment will
be on display prior to kick-off including: a BlackHawk helicopter; Stryker
and Bradley armored personnel carriers; and Humvees on the north field of
the Kibbie-ASUI Activity Center. At half-time, a swearing-in ceremony will
be conducted for local men and women who recently enlisted in the Air Force,
Army, Navy and Marines.

Take care, Vandals.
