Some thoughts on ilegals and immigration
I am sure that in some cases there are abuses of ilegals. I think that the biggest abusers are the people that smuggle in ilegals
In cases I know of where ilegals might be hired there is no abuse. My son works for Magic Valley Farms in Wendell. They are a company that produce specialty onions shallots, potatoes etc. that are marketed to nich markets world wide. Their starting wage for everyone is $10.00 per hour. A lot of mexicans are employed there that do not speak english. They have green cards. That is not to say that they are valid. Tabor Dairy at shoshone pays ther workers (mostly mexican) $2000 per month and provide a place for them to stay. The emigration issue is a tough one. There a lot of problems no matter how you look at it. There is a shortage of workers in the US, particular for farm labor. The guest worker program is needed.
The problem is how to ensure that people are here legally. I do not have a problem with anyone wanting to become US citizens. There is a problem with large segments staying here and maintaining a separate language, I think it is fine to maintain their culture. The Basque people are a good example of those that have came here and maintained their culture, but have learned english and have blended into society. Maintaining a separate language results in balkanisation. The US was built on immigration and has been a melting pot. This is the way it should be. How to solve the problem of ilegal will be hard to do, maybe imposable. For those that are here the best thing that can be done is to teach them english with all possible speed.
