The Friday Letter
A Newsletter for University of Idaho Alumni and Friends June 23, 2006

Dear Friends,

Earlier this week in Washington, D.C., the University of Idaho launched the
Operation Education Scholarship, a pioneering program designed to help
veterans who are severely and permanently wounded as a result of service
since Sept. 11, 2001. The spouses of wounded veterans also will be eligible
for the scholarship, which is the first program of its kind in the nation.

The University will provide wounded veterans with financial support and
resources - such as tuition, fees and books, on-campus housing,
transportation, medical assistance, child care, adaptive equipment, tutoring
and mentorship - at our main campus in Moscow, to assist veterans and their
families as they re-enter civilian life. The University also has plans to
partner with corporations around the country to offer internships and assist
in job placement.

Karen, as the University's First Lady, will serve as chair of the
scholarship program, and will work with the Helping Our Heroes Foundation,
which has pledged initial funding and continued support of the program.
Major funding for the scholarship program will be provided by University of
Idaho alumni and friends and from individuals, corporations and foundations
who share the University's interest in assisting America's wounded veterans
and honoring the sacrifices they have made for our country.

The University of Idaho will begin accepting applications for this unique
scholarship July 1, and we hope to welcome the first Operation Education
Scholarship recipients fall semester 2006, which begins Aug. 21. For more
information or to obtain an application, veterans should contact John Sawyer
at (208) 885-7979, johns at uidaho.edu. Gifts may be made in support of
Operation Education by calling the University of Idaho at (208) 885-7069 or
866-671-7041, or online at www.uidaho.edu/givetoidaho

I appreciate the support for this scholarship program from alumnus Sen.
Larry Craig, chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee; the
Honorable R. James Nicholson, U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs; and U.S.
Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne, who also is an alumnus. Members
of the Idaho Congressional delegation, Sen. Mike Crapo and Congressmen C. L.
"Butch" Otter and Mike Simpson, also have praised the goals of the program.

President

Here's the latest news from the University of Idaho:

Bowling analogies earned a strike for Scott Forthofer, University of Idaho
residence life area coordinator, at the National Association of College and
University Residence Halls annual conference in Berkeley, Calif. Forthofer
received the National Adviser of the Year award from NACURH. An avid bowler,
Forthofer compares his advising strategy to teaching a new bowler how to
hold the ball, and then acting as the bumpers to keep the ball from going in
the gutter as it finds its way. NACURH is the largest student-run,
non-profit organization in the nation, advocating for the interests and
welfare of residence hall students, and providing opportunities for their
personal growth and development.

Vandal Athletics is hosting a Vandal Cruise on Lake Coeur d'Alene July 15.
The boat will begin boarding from Independence Point at 6:30 p.m. and will
return at 10. Join Idaho coaches and other Vandals to help kick-off the
2006-07 season of Vandal Athletics. Tickets are on sale for $35 each. For
more information please call (208) 641-0933.

Jeffry Stoddard, '75, president of the Buie Stoddard Group in Laguna Niguel,
Calif., has made a gift of $100,000 to the J.A. Albertson Building. The
facility is making a tremendous impact on the University's learning
environment, and Jeff's gift helps the College of Business and Economics
make final payment on the building project. Jeff has been a partner with Bob
Buie since 1983, and their company has played an integral role in the
development of the entire Laguna Niguel community. Jeff and his wife,
Kristine, split their time between homes in Laguna Niguel and McCall and
they have two grown children. Jeff's commitment to Idaho does not end with
the support of the college. For many years, he has been one of the strongest
and best supporters of the Vandal Scholarship Fund and Vandal football.
The University of Idaho is deeply grateful for the Stoddard's generosity.
Not only did this recent gift give a big boost to the final phases of the
building campaign, but his loyalty and support of athletics has been
important to many student-athletes.

Take care, Moscow (you, too, Vandals).
