[Vision2020] Gay amendment

You've nailed it, Tom (and James and Sunil). This is to whip the foamers
into a frenzy, which will subside the day after the election. It's
grotesque pandering, and too many Americans are uninformed enough to take
the bait.

The idea that James Dobson, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and Gary Bauer will
open the chutes and let their followers out to stampede the polls over the
"saving" of marriage is horrifying, but the fact that they'll all do so and
think they've offered a grand, great service to God in obeying these men is
just pitiful.

Except I have no pity for them, just for the millions of struggling
Americans whose very real needs and oppression will tear this country apart
much faster than two women or two men getting married.

In my opinion, same-sex marriage is a non-issue. I believe that the primary
(if not the ONLY) reason this issue is brought up is King George's attempt
to unify his conservative base behind a common cause before the November
elections. This is what people do when their popularity drops below 30%.

There are two reasons why I consider this to be a non-issue.

1) A "Marriage Amendment" is extremely unlikely to pass in the US Senate.
Given recent developments, it is also not likely to make any high marks in
the House, either.

2) King George is hoping for a strongly partisan debate on this issue.
This would serve to galvanize his base as he prances around the country
making exaggerated claims that the Democratic Party is pushing for special
privileges for those heinous homosexuals whose sole agenda is to deteriorate
American family values, when all the Dems are pushing for is NOT special
privileges, but EQUAL RIGHTS.

Thoughts?

This morning I watched some boneheaded congressman touting how a
constitutional ban against gay marriage will protect marriage. Could some of
you like thinking visionaries explain what the mechanism would be for for
this miracle. I fail to see how making a joke of our constitution would in
any way help out anybodies marriage. A couple of things that might actually
help if the republicans are interested are affordable housing and living
wages. Economic strife is reported to be one of the most devastating forces
acting against successful marriage. I have serious doubts that banning
anyone from marriage will help help the institution.
