[Vision2020] a tutorial for Austin

Austin,

Doug Farris' little snippet of humor referred to the IBTA decision stemming
from Rose Huskey and Saundra Lund's complaint regarding tax exemption, not
from Don Huskey's complaint about boarding houses. Big difference. Huge
one, in fact. You might want to take a step back and re-read her post.
Then, if you'd like some more history, I'd be happy to meet with you.

As far as walking a mile in Doug Farris' shoes to understand the source of
his vitriol, I'll decline. Not because I'm not an empathic person -- I'd
like to think I am -- but because that would indicate that the original
taxation complaint was a personal slam against Kirkers, Doug and yourself
included. It wasn't. It's not personal, it's legal, Austin. Christ Church
has been the focus of legitimate complaints regarding taxation, its NSA
presence downtown, and illegal boarding houses throughout Moscow. No other
church has because no other church offends in those ways -- even, maybe
especially, those Biblically conservative churches whose theology has the
same doctrinal roots as yours. In addition, Moscow has been treated to a
smorgasbord of other activities, some illegal (gambling casinos) and some
merely offensive in their bigotry, stupidity, and arrogance (time doesn't
allow me to enumerate these) that Kirk elders have been linked to. You
might be too young to remember that while the elders evidently were
disgusted by the casinos, for example, their subsequent behavior in handling
the mess was at least as immoral as that of the future men who ran the
thing. And the staggering quantity and quality of bad behavior and arrogant
pronouncements your elders and pastor have demonstrated in the public square
is both mind-boggling and heart-rending to a lot of us.

But, of course, you don't believe me. Why would you? The Intoleristas
you've been told to hold in such disdain are just a rag-tag group of
hellbound malcontents, right? I mean, there couldn't be any merit to our
objections -- it's just personal, an objection of the saints being
persecuted for righteousness.

So here's an idea, if you're mature enough in your faith to give it a try.
Why not, while still remaining kind and charitable, simply put away for a
time the personal elements of this situation -- set aside the cries of
persecution from your community and put up on a shelf your animus toward
mine -- and then do something truly radical: Look at the facts. Check your
Bible and see if your theology squares. See how Doug Wilson, never mind
Doug Farris, matches up to the great saints of the New Testament church.
Read court documents. Read a magazine that doesn't come from Canon Press.
Talk to people from outside of the church -- those who were in and left and
those who never have been Kirkers. Pray, and be willing to hear the answer.
Ask hard questions -- of yourself, your parents, your elders, your
co-congregants, and your pastor. (I have no fear at all of disagreeing with
my pastor, Austin. Can you say that about yours?). Be willing to hear
those answers and act on them. Ask yourself what I asked a young NSA'er a
few months ago: If you were a pastor, would you do and say and write the
things Doug Wilson has over the last few years?

If, as I suspect, the answer to that one is "no," then I'd ask you why in
the world you trust the nurture of your soul to a man whose conduct you
can't possibly find admirable, can't possibly want to emulate, and can't
possibly remind you of the Christ you serve.

And then, if you ever want to meet with me, contact me offline. I'll buy
the beer.

keely,

(putting on my Metzler hat and having a go at some non-threatening
question-asking)

Do you think Mr. Huskey's complaint has any merit? Do you understand why it
seems hypocritical to Mr. Ferris?

I'm guessing Mr. Ferris feels the zoning complaints were harassment. If you
would walk a mile in his mocassins (or however long a hundred acres is... we
are in the wood now, after all), what do you think your Christian response
would be? (for the sake of discussion, remember that you think the complaint
is harrassment)

Not sarcastic, but terribly, horribly amused with myself on account of the
Metzler hat bit,

-Austin
