To paraphrase and concatenate various (primarily Wikipedian) sources:

"When written with a capital "I", _the_ Internet refers to the
*worldwide* set of interconnected networks, while "_an_ internet"
(lowercase i) refers to any internetwork for connecting multiple
networks together."
