I thought Al Gore was a good and decent man when even my fellow Democrats
thought he was a pedantic, dull-as-dishwater cribbage board of a candidate
-- stiff, wooden, and full of holes.
And surely we must concede that the Republican Party of today bears no
resemblance to that of a few decades ago; it barely represents democracy in
some respects. I'm just as frustrated with the Democratic party and hope
that both get back to their origins sooner rather than later, because later
might be too late.
I fear for my country and especially so with three more years of our current
administration. Much of the damage won't be undone, ever, and much more
looks likely to follow. It's not a conservative/liberal thing -- it's
beyond that, and I don't think it's too much to say that it's now a matter
of life and death, not just for the poor in America, not just for the
soldier and civilian victims of the war in Iraq, not just for "national
security" vs. "terrorism," but a profound life threat to the very soul of
this nation. And when a nation that perceives itself as a light, a shining
city on a hill, stumbles in darkness, it seems unlikely that the rubble from
the fall will only bring damage within its boundaries.

Finally, someone has put into clearly spoken words that which I know to be
true but cannot persuasively say.
Phil Nisbet, the link below explains better than I how the political party
you make pains not be centrist about has been largely co-opted by the crazy
and unreasonable. The Republican party as you knew it is dead. Questioning
the administration and all of its parts is both patriotic and prudent.
Perhaps you are entirely correct on the mining issue. That does not take
away from the greater issues that are crying to be addressed..
Pat Kraut, this explains better than I why George Bush does not deserve a
pass.
To everyone else, please enjoy this speech. It is a fine example of true
statesmanship, something I thought didn't much exist today. It is probably
one of the best speeches you will hear in a long time and it is very, very
relevant to our future as citizens in a democracy, whether you are
Republican or Democrat. So why isn't it on prime time TV? Interesting......

After hearing the speech, think about encouraging congress to investigate:

As I mentioned before, evil isn't that people make bad decisions or leaders
make mistakes. Evil is that an apathetic majority let them get away with it.
It is time to get off our collective behinds. Will you do your part?
