Nick,

Thanks again for your heartfelt post.  I 
certainly appreciate the sincerity of your 
position.  I still commend you for your efforts 
and accomplishments on behalf of higher ed employees in the State of Idaho.

Now then, I do enjoy a robust stout or porter 
from time to time, but my wife insists that I 
avoid the "beer-soaking".  Otherwise, she won't let me out in public.

As to the "fairness" or appropriateness of the 
"right to work" status, I fear we will just have to agree to disagree.

The closed shop position (you don't work there 
unless you join the union) is at the far end of 
the distribution.  At the other end of the 
spectrum is the "no unions allowed" 
position.  Both positions are too extreme for me.

I favor Idaho's version of "right to work" 
because it gives employees the "right to choose" 
union membership or not.  If the working 
environment is not conducive to promoting the 
values and job satisfaction that employees are 
seeking, a union will have the opportunity to 
"right things."  At the same time folks who don't 
want to be involved in "collective bargaining" 
are free to negotiate on their own or through 
their advocate (lawyer).  It seems to me to be 
the only plausible position to offer 
employees.  To force employees to pay a fee to 
sustain a union (though not a member) takes 
resources away from those individuals that would seek private assistance.

Anyway, we don't have to agree on everything to 
have a healthy respect for each other.  And I do 
respect the accomplishments that you have made 
over the years.  And we certainly agree on the 
need to carefully scrutinize the employment 
policies and procedures used by higher ed 
institutions in Idaho.  We both have a track record in fighting those dragons.

And, feel free to knock on my door anytime.  I 
trust our dialogue helps many understand the core issues.
