[Vision2020] Celebrate freedom

This is four for me, Tony, so I'll keep it short. Sorry to the others but I can't help replying.

I understand that members of the new right love to call academics and other professionals "elitists." It upsets me that this lame strategy is so effective -- anyone care to speculate about the general public's impressions of philosophy professors? -- but other than that it doesn't bother me too much.

The fact is I lived in a single-parent household (the youngest of six kids) and below the poverty level for most of my pre-adult life; I have a sister with cerebral palsy; a brother who fought in the Viet Nam war (drafted after my father left home); another sister who died of breast cancer; ... I'll spare you the other examples.

I'm not trying to flex my white-trash muscles here -- even though they are considerable. I'm just trying to say that accusations of my elitism speak more to your propensity to prejudge folks you don't even know than anything else.

JOE LOGIC, apparently listening closely is not your strong suit. No, I did
not say that I necessarily knew as much about the constitution as a lawyer.
I said, J.L., that we were both well informed, just not necessarily in the
exact same areas. Get that this time Teach?

It's you, Mr. Logic, who does not respect those who have educated
themselves. A typically arrogant and dismissive, elitist position -
precisely what I would expect from a self important academic.

Now go grade a paper or something.
