[Vision2020] Vision2020 Digest, Vol 2, Issue 205

Lacking knowledge about what goes into preparation of foie gras, I looked
around (googled) to see just what level of cruelty is involved in the
treatment of the ducks and geese whose livers become foie gras.

I was of the impression that these ducks and geese were treated no
differently than the chickens the end up at KFC.

I was wrong.

I have never eaten foie gras and henceforth never will.

Thank you for opening my eyes, Saundra and Megan.

Saundra, I'd like to thank you for posting the notice about foie
gras. I had no idea this restaurant was even coming to town, and I am
horrified to see that they will be serving foie gras in Moscow! I
actually joined the Vision2020 list today after your message was
forwarded to me. I plan to talk to the owner and give them a little
information on how cruel the practice of raising ducks & geese for
foie gras is, and ask that it be taken off the menu. I will probably
also mention that there are members of the community (including
myself) that are boycotting the restaurant because of this. I hope
the owners will be understanding as to why some of us wouldn't want
such things to be a part of our community.

Also, I know there is an animal rights group on campus and I have
asked them if they'd like to help me organize a protest outside the
restaurant if they choose to keep serving duck liver. If anyone is
interested in participating, please feel free to e-mail me (megan at
meganpru dot com) and I'll let you know what plans we come up with.
I'm thinking some large posters of ducks being force fed and a
petition for people who wish to boycott the restaurant to sign would
probably help get the point across, nothing too major, and it
shouldn't be disruptive other than perhaps getting people to think
twice about what they're eating & supporting.

For those that aren't aware, here is some info on foie gras and how
geese & ducks are force fed to make it:
http://www.goveg.com/factoryFarming_ducks_foie.asp (see the videos in
the right column especially)
http://www.gourmetcruelty.com/
http://www.stopforcefeeding.com/page.php?module=home

Thanks again Saundra for not supporting this cruelty. I'll probably
be called all kinds of "lovely" names for being a "radical" animal
rights activist, but someone's gotta stick up for the critters. :)

peace,
~megan
