Chris,
If you heat the ice to 33 degrees or higher it will no longer be to loud for the neighbors. It would be cheaper too.

At this point the plan is to enclose the current facility with a metal soundproof building. The footprint will be big enough to support a full size rink and support facilities; however they will continue to use the current rink. The hope is that with the soundproof building they will be able to extend operating hours back to the original length and hopefully make enough money to justify expansion to a full size rink.
I have not heard if Tidymans is back into play or if there are other sites.
As for the horse arena, it is used in the summer but as to the extent of its use I no longer know how often.
Also, I must make a public apology
.until I was in town last month for Phils funeral I never realized exactly how loud that rink is. I had a chance to walk around the outside of the facility and finally figured out why the neighbors were complaining so much. That place is loud. Fairbanks has 5 indoor enclosed rinks that produce no sound outside of the walls of each structure. We have 17 outside rinks without covers that do produce noise but it dissipates within just a few feet and bothers no one. So with my current experience of rinks in Fairbanks and my past connection to the Moscow rink I went visited the facility and discovered how wrong I was about the noise from that rink.
So to the neighbors who I argued with in public hearings: I was wrong. You are right. The Moscow rink has a design problem that really amplifies the heck out of activities inside and frankly is a nuisance.
Please support the county commissioners and Rotarys effort to fully enclose the current rink in a sound proof building. That effort will be a win-win for everyone involved much like the compromise for design of the ball fields off of Palouse River Drive.
Thanks,
Chris Storhok

Actually,
Whatever happened with the ice rink? I have heard several ideas; move to Tidyman's, build a permanent building with a regulation size rink and keep the other for figure skating, etc.
Does the horse arena at the fairgrounds ever get used? -Tom

And how much are these 7 playfields that we can only use four months out the year going to cost?
What are the kids going to do the other 8 months out of the year?
Just curious.

Yeaaaa! and a wonderful job done by the playfield committee in turning out a
compromise that gets the kids their fields and saves the integrity of the
arboretum and the local neighborhood. They also did an outstanding job in
realizing the hazardous access issues and rectified those problems to the
extent possible.
That's what I'm talking about!!!! Democracy can work.
Lets get the fields on the ground, like Ament says, as quickly as possible.
