Donovan, Rose et. al.
If voting in the Moscow School District for a bond levy or the school board
counts, Rose can vote for those Moscow City related public infrastructure
issues. And of course votes for county, and some state and federal matters, are
open to all residents of Latah County, all votes that can influence what occurs
within Moscow City limits.
Constitutional free speech rights guarantee citizens the right to attempt to
influence governmental/political decisions, whether or not the citizen can
vote directly in an election on a specific issue. Not only is it a citizens
right to speak to influence the decisions made by governing bodies away from the
citizens residency, they are also free to donate labor, resources and money,
subject to election laws, of course. How many US Congressional and/or state
congressional elections are legally influenced by money and propaganda coming
from outside the state in question?
So, political science major Donovan Arnold, are you suggesting that laws be
passed to block the free speech/political organizing rights of Latah County
residents who reside outside Moscow city limits, for the city that is the
economic/cultural/political hub within which such residents often spend the most of
their dollars and waking hours, a city that may be where their children or
grandchildren also spend most of their waking, learning and socializing hours? If
traffic problems, violence or bigotry, etc. might endanger their child
attending school in Moscow, do you think that because a parent lives outside Moscow
City limits, they should be denied a means to influence events inside Moscow
involving city government?
I am only pointing out what Donovan and almost everyone on Vision2020 knows,
so Donovan's doubts regarding Rose's right to be politically active in Moscow
City politics smacks of the same kind of biased personally motivated attack
that he claims he is speaking against.
Disagree with Rose on substantive issues if you must, but suggesting she
should not be politically active in Moscow City politics because she resides
outside the city limits is an attempt to silence rightful political speech and
conduct.
