Actually what Joe wrote is a version of a dilemma attributed first to 
Socrates:

Is something good purely because God says so or does God say so because it 
is good.

If the first, then goodness is an arbitrary judgment of God -- anything 
it/she/he declares as good is good; if the second, then God is relying on 
some standard apart from itself/herself/himself.


Many philosophers have pointed out that understanding the problem posed by 
this dilemma is in part a test of whether the reader/thinker has 
philosophical aptitude.
