6 dead, 14 missing as monster typhoon pounds Kyushu

At least six people have died and 14 others are missing after powerful
Typhoon No. 14 pounded the southern island of Kyushu on Tuesday,
government officials said.

As of 10 p.m. Tuesday, the typhoon was located in the Sea of Japan
about 40 kilometers west-northwest of Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture,
after tearing through Nagasaki Prefecture earlier in the day, the
Meteorological Agency said.

Packing winds of 35 meters per second and an atmospheric pressure of
970 hectopascals at its center, the typhoon was heading
north-northeast at a speed of 25 kilometers per hour.

Two people died in Miyazaki Prefecture, while three others were found
dead in Kagoshima Prefecture amid torrential weather conditions
brought about by the typhoon.
Another person was confirmed dead in Tokushima Prefecture on the
island of Shikoku.
Rain topped 1,200 millimeters in Nango and Ebino, Miyazaki Prefecture.

The typhoon is expected to reach Hokkaido, northern Japan, on
