RE: Kilo' First Day at School

The halls were empty at Potlatch Junior/Senior High School as Kilo, one of
Latah County's two drug dogs, sniffed his way across rows of lockers
searching for illegal drugs. Today was Kilo's first day at school with his
handler Deputy Ryan Sillers. Dep. Sillers and Kilo worked all of the
lockers on both sides of the Potlatch School which houses both Junior and
Senior High School students. In between rows of lockers, Dep. Sillers
explained Kilo's training to Principal Gordon Steinbis. Akin to fall
training for football players, Kilo's first day at school was an exciting
and exhausting exercise. While going down rows of lockers, Kilo had to take
breaks and cleanse his palate at the drinking fountain from time to time.
Gratefully, Kilo did not find any illegal drugs in student lockers.

Potlatch School earned the privilege of being able to use the County's drug
dogs after showing Latah County Deputies unprecedented cooperation in
investigations and in being able to show a presence at the school during
school events. Sheriff Rausch extended the offer to Potlatch Jr./Sr. High
School at the end of last school year after recognizing that Principal
Steinbis and his staff had been traditionally and actively engaged in trying
to help the Sheriff's Office solve juvenile cases either originating at the
school or involving students attending Potlatch. Other schools in Latah
county contract with a private agency for locker and car inspections with a
drug dog

The Latah County Sheriff's Office hopes that in extending this privilege to
Potlatch, other schools will be inspired to become actively involved in
helping the Sheriff's Office work to solve and, ultimately, reduce juvenile
crime in the County.

Potlatch will also be given a citation for appreciation for their efforts in
helping the Latah County Sheriff's Office bark out our drug problem.
