The Friday Letter
A Newsletter for University of Idaho Alumni and Friends Sept. 2, 2005
Dear Friends,
The University of Idaho has launched humanitarian efforts to assist victims
of Hurricane Katrina. As images and stories surface of the catastrophic
effects of the hurricane, we are just beginning to discover the devastation
on communities, families and individuals in the southeastern U.S.
The University is immediately accepting students who enrolled or planned to
enroll at universities in the areas affected by the hurricane. Students will
be placed in fall classes with available space, with first priority given to
Idaho residents. They also may enroll for the January, 2006 semester. In
addition, 10 tuition, fee and housing scholarships for one year will be
offered to any student whose college career has been interrupted by Katrina.
Interested students may contact UI Admissions Office immediately, (208)
885-6326.
The University also will collect humanitarian aid via cash, checks, credit
cards and UI payroll deductions. Contributions will be transferred directly
to the American Red Cross. Such fund-raising efforts will be conducted at
all campus sporting and cultural events throughout the year.
UI student groups have begun to discuss how best to get help to the
hurricane victims. According to Steve Janowiak, director of student
activities and leadership, a number of our student service organizations and
the associated student organization are talking about how they can help.
You also can make immediate contributions to the American Red Cross on their
secure giving site at www.redcross.org. It is clear that our fellow
Americans who have been affected will need the nation's help.

Here's the latest news from the University of Idaho:
Robert Smith has been appointed interim dean at UI-Idaho Falls. An industry
expert for over 23 years, Smith has been a distinguished professor of
subsurface science in UI's department of biological and agricultural
engineering since 2001. He assumes his new position Sept. 6. "We are
delighted that Dr. Smith has accepted the dean position in Idaho Falls,"
said Doug Baker, UI provost. "His relationship and experience working as a
researcher with Idaho National Laboratory complements the partnership that
UI developed with INL and its plans to work with the new contractor
Battelle."
Football fans will have three more opportunities to watch the Vandals on
television. Their Sept. 10 game at UNLV as well as the Sept. 24 Western
Athletic Conference opener against Hawaii and the Oct. 29 game at New Mexico
State will be carried live by the Go Vandals Network - KBCI out of Boise.
The games also will air on Lewiston's KLEW-TV, KEPR-TV in the Tri-Cities and
Comcast in Spokane, Coeur d'Alene, Sandpoint, Kellogg and Wallace.
Two Vandal activists and Idaho engineering graduates in the Puget Sound
area, Larry Johnson '79 and Pat Hauge '91,'93,'94, are offering a limited
edition Vandal football calendar which celebrates Idaho's long-awaited move
to the WAC. All profits benefit the Vandal Scholarship Fund. It's available
at the UI Bookstore or at www.vandalstuff.org.

Take care, Moscow.

"What is objectionable, what is dangerous, about extremists is not that they
are extreme, but that they are intolerant. The evil is not what they say
about their cause, but what they say about their opponents."
