Visionaries:

For those souls breathlessly waiting for the release of Doug Wilson's latest
attempt at southern history, he writes:

"But lest there be no accountability at all, I submitted the manuscript of
my forthcoming book on this vexed historical question to one of the top
historians in the country, and he gave the book the mother of all blurbs."

Presumably, he refers to Eugene Genovese. I don't know what the mother of
all blurbs would be, but for a recent critical look at the work of Genovese
follow the link below.

Right Church, Wrong Pew: Eugene Genovese & Southern Conservatism, Alex
Lichtenstein [from New Politics, vol. 6, no. 3 (new series), whole no. 23, Summer
1997]

The article is great reading. For example:

"Ultimately, however, in attempting to chart a third way between the free
market conservatism of today's ascendent right and a discredited collectivism of
the left, Genovese finds inspiration now in a Southern tradition associated
with slavery and racism, rather than the socialist tradition compromised by
Stalinism."

All I can say is, haul up the battle flag boys, get on your feet, they're
playing Dixie and look, Gene Genovese's leading the parade.

Rose Huskey

"One cannot level one's moral lance at every evil in the universe. There are
just too many of them. But you can do something, and the difference between
doing something and doing nothing is everything." Daniel Berrigan
