A Newsletter for University of Idaho Alumni and Friends 

March 25, 2005

Dear Friends,

As a university community and an extended family of alumni and friends
across the nation, we mourn the death of Jeanne M. Hoover, a dear friend and
former First Lady of the University of Idaho. As many of you know, Jeanne
suffered a massive stroke on March 16 and died on Tuesday morning. 
Services are being held today in Caldwell. On behalf of the University, I
convey our deepest condolences to Bob Hoover and his family. Jeanne will be
remembered fondly by the University of Idaho community.

Earlier this week, I appointed David Chichester as interim vice president
for finance and administration. David is a seasoned financial officer with a
proven track record of managing financial functions in both entrepreneurial
and public organizations. I was especially impressed by his reputation for
establishing outstanding teams and turning around distressed organizations.
Most recently, he was instrumental in reducing costs and returning Starbucks
Coffee, Japan, to profitability. David also served as senior vice president
of finance for Starbucks Coffee, Seattle, for three years. As a member of
the administrative leadership team, he will help guide the University
through our current deficit reduction efforts and implement plans for
renewal. This is a temporary appointment and David will serve until the
position is filled following a national search.

Here's the latest news from the University of Idaho:

* A delegation of 19 UI students are in New York City this week, to
participate in the National Model United Nations. The UI group will
represent Norway and met with Norwegian diplomats, UN officials and UI
alumni. The UI team, sponsored by the Martin Institute, has won recognition
at the events for the past three years. "From the students' research, they
found that Norway is one of the most respected nations internationally,"
said Bill Smith, adviser from the Martin Institute. "It has very little
external debt, little crime, low poverty and a high standard of living. It
is the No. 2 exporter of oil in the world, and is very involved in
humanitarian projects.

*Today is Vandal Friday on the UI campus. More than 1,800 high school
seniors and their family members are taking part in the campus preview,
which is the University's largest student recruitment event. Vandal Friday
includes campus tours, open houses at the residence halls, Greek Houses and
student activity hubs and special evening entertainment. A track for parents
features sessions with UI President Timothy White, Dean of Students Bruce
Pitman, New Student Services Director Lloyd Scott and Director of Admissions
and Financial Aid Dan Davenport, who provide insights into campus life,
academics, scholarships and financial aid opportunities, and class
registration processes. 

*At the age of 24, Taso Kinnas is the youngest member of the Heritage
Society, a gifting society that honors those who have made provisions for
the University of Idaho through their estate plan. Taso has named the
College of Business and Economics and the Farmhouse fraternity as
beneficiaries of his life insurance policy. He graduated in May 2004 with a
double major in finance and accounting and now works as a revenue agent with
the Internal Revenue Service in Long Beach, Calif. By providing scholarship
support to future generations of students, Taso will ensure that others
receive the same educational opportunities and experiences he enjoyed as a
student at the University of Idaho.
