  National Expert on Disability Issues 
  To Visit UI and the City of Moscow on April 6-7
   
  Jane Jarrow, a nationally recognized expert on disability issues, will be visiting the University of Idaho campus and the City of Moscow, ID on April 6-7 as part of the Presidential Campus-wide Diversity Programming Initiative and the City of Moscow Human Rights Commission's Community Forum on Disability Access Issues.

  Jarrow is president of Disability Access and Information Support (DAIS) based in Columbus, Ohio. DAIS provides services for individuals concerned with disability and access in higher education. Her professional involvement in the field of disability issues spans two decades. She is the former executive director of the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD).   During her visit to UI, Jarrow will lead a conference on disability issues. All sessions are open to the public. The sessions take place on the fourth floor of the University of Idaho Commons, the 1912 Building, Third St. Moscow and the Moscow City Council Chambers. 
   

  April 6

   

  6:00 - 7:00 PM            Reception and Poster Session:  Universal Design Projects, UI Interior Design Students

  Location: 1912 Center, 3rd Street, Moscow.  (Vandal Trolley will provide transportation from Kibby Dome, Living Learning Center and SUB  to the 1912 Building)

   

  7:00 - 9:00 PM            A Community Forum - We're All in This Together

  Location: 1912 Center, 3rd Street, Moscow 

                                      

  Dr. Jarrow will speak on the current climate re: Americans with Disabilities Act.  She will reference recent court cases and how they impact service provision, both on university campuses and within communities.  A student and community member panel will address access issues. Discussion will be encouraged. (Target audience:  University and Moscow communities) (Vandal Trolley will provide transportation back to campus)

   

  April 7

   

  1:30 - 3:30 PM           Issues of Interest to Local and University Community Location: City of Moscow Council Chambers, City Hall, 

  3rd Street, Moscow

                                     (Vandal Trolley will provide transportation from previous session at the UI Commons to the Moscow City Council Chambers and back to campus)

                                      

  Service/Companion animals, Transportation; being sensitive to people with disabilities without offending. Meeting the intent and spirit of the law as well as the letter of the law.  (Target audience:  Landlords, tenants, students, concerned citizens, city officials, health care providers, etc.)

  What do these laws require?  What are student responsibilities vs. institutional responsibilities?  (Target audience:  faculty, staff and students)

  10:30 - Noon               Understanding Hidden Disabilities - What are they and how do they impact learning?  How do they impact advising?   Crest/Horizon, Commons 4th Floor

   

  Learn about learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders and how these disabilities impact students in a traditional educational setting.  Tips for advising, understanding learning styles, communication, finding the balance between "over accommodation and under-accommodation" (Target audience:  faculty and advisors)

  Join a table focused on current issues - ex.: service animals, student accountability and accommodations, documentation requirements, accommodating students at satellite campuses, etc.

  How to accommodate students with disabilities. (Target

  Disability issues related to lawyers providing services for clients with disabilities are becoming increasingly important to the legal profession.  This program will provide a brief overview of the most common claims and defenses in disability cases -- e.g., housing, employment, criminal justice, family law, education, and facilities access.  The program then will focus in depth on challenges posed by the lawyer-client relationship -- e.g., how to understand the client's needs, how to communicate effectively, and how to help the client make appropriate, informed decisions.  Dr. Jarrow will be joined by Ken Nagy, attorney in Lewiston, who represents many people with disabilities.  Mr. Nagy also serves on City of Moscow's Fair Housing Commission. (Target population: law students; everyone is welcome to attend)

  Do testing accommodations really level the playing field or give students an unfair advantage?  Are faculty entitled to know the specifics about a student's disability (Target audience:  Faculty)
