You're just begging for my linguistics lecture on how good Anglo-Saxon 
words became "dirty" (and their French equivalents "clean") after the 
Norman invasion of 1066.  If you really want to shock yourselves, get 
out the Oxford English Dictionary and look up the origins of the word 
"quaint."
