Dear Pat (and others),

As a member of the "they" you're so worried about, I'd like you to consider that the range of sexual and romantic practices across history and geography is extremely varied, and that what's been  considered "normal," "right," "appropriate," and "civilized" in human sexual relations is extraordinarily diverse.  

I think it's reasonable to acknowledge that people have had same-sex relationships throughout history, and that some of them are quite well-known.  It's just a fact.  I don't know anyone who's decided to be gay because someone famous was gay.  I don't know anybody who's straight because someone famous was straight, either.

It does strike me that "It's wrong because I say it's wrong" (or "because I say God says it's wrong") is just as specious an argument as "Everybody else is doing it"--an argument which no one was making, by the way.    Neither assertion really accomplishes anything in the way of reasoned conversation.
