RE: Licensing snowmobiles

The snow is here and that means it's time for winter recreation.
Snowmobiling is the third most popular outdoor sport and is increasing in
popularity every year. The Latah County Sheriff's Office, Clearwater County
Sheriff's Office, and the Idaho State Snowmobiling Association (ISSA) remind
you to keep it legal, safe, and fun.

Snowmobiles are motorized vehicles and must be licensed and registered. Be
sure to check weather conditions before setting out for the day. If it is
foggy or windy, it might be difficult to retrace your tracks. Wear a helmet
and protective, weather appropriate gear.

The ISSA recommends having your sled thoroughly checked before riding. If
you are not confident in your abilities to check your own sled, take it to a
dealer who is. Always ride with several other sledders-never alone.
Remember that with the speeds sleds travel, areas you can ride to in 30
minutes could take three days to walk out of. Have a contingency plan and
carry emergency supplies.

Before you set out to ride, make sure that you are in an area that allows
snowmobiles. The penalties for trespassing and for illegal use of land
include heavy fines and possible jail time.

To learn more about snowmobile safety and preparedness, attend the
"Snowmobile Adult Responsibility Safety Course" sponsored by the Idaho State
Snowmobile Association at the Elk River, Idaho, Community Center on December
10, 2005, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. For more information about the course,
contact the ISSA Safety Chairman Lauren Frei at (208) 743-7409 of the ISSA
President-Elect, Diana Gregg at (208) 826-3628.
