As one creates more and more sub-groups "they" become more and more
different from "us". All we are doing is creating a larger and large divide
between us. That is not to say one shouldn't take pride in ones heritage,
witness all of the festivals that take place around the country and allow
others to catch a glimpse of other cultures.
The Hutus and Tutsis were acting tribally, not nationally as you stated. And
the genocide in eastern Europe between Christians and Muslims is religious.
Take a pie and cut it into ever smaller pieces. Eventually you will have an
unrecognizable mass of goo, still technically a pie, but completely
unrecognizable. Without the distinct parts that hold it together it just
becomes a disorganized mass of goo. The same will happen to the very fabric
of our society if we keep dividing ourselves into ever smaller sub-groups.
