The Friday Letter
A Newsletter for University of Idaho Alumni and Friends Aug. 12, 2005

Dear Friends,

There was a surprise announcement at last week's ceremony at the Nancy M.
Cummings Research, Extension and Education Center near Salmon. The event was
scheduled to celebrate the fifth year of the agreement with the Auen
Foundation to donate the facility to UI. In meeting established performance
guidelines, the University anticipated receiving a quarter interest in the
ranch. But Auen Foundation representatives had different thoughts. They
announced their decision to transfer full ownership of the ranch, valued at
approximately $10 million, to the University in coming months and to
increase the acreage gifted.

We are grateful for their generosity and we are inspired by their trust in
our ability to direct the center to meet its full potential to provide
educational opportunities in the Salmon River Valley and beef cattle
research that stretches far beyond Idaho's borders.

The University now has benefited from two very significant gifts in the past
few weeks, which add resources with a value of approximately $20 milllion.
These gifts not only generate incredible momentum to our fund-raising
efforts, they provide evidence of a renewal of spirit and dedication.

Tim White
President

Here's the latest news from the University of Idaho:

~ As Space Shuttle Discovery returned home, 15 University of Idaho interns
are returning to campus with exciting tales from their summer programs held
at NASA centers around the U.S., including the NASA Jet Propulsion
Laboratory in California. This is the third consecutive year that more Idaho
students were accepted into JPL - the lead U.S. center for robotic
exploration of the solar system - than from any other state. "NASA
internships often lead to NASA jobs after graduation," said April
Christenson, NASA Idaho Space Grant Consortium.program coordinator. "These
interns far exceeded the hopes of the program, and we know their experiences
this summer will lead to bigger and better things."

~ The University of Idaho's Student Alumni Relations Board (SArb) received
two awards at the Association of Student Advancement Programs Network
Convention in Cambridge, Mass. UI's SArb received the Outstanding
Organization award for the 42 quality events it organized last year. The
Outstanding Web site award was given to SArb for its design, content and
ease of use.

~ Kathryn A. Supko of Boise, a 1975 alumna in education, recently
contributed $50,000 toward the new Teaching and Learning Center, formerly
the UCC, on the University of Idaho campus. The new bright and airy spaces
in the TLC include 30 multimedia classrooms each with numerous high tech
features and a 32 seat computer lab. Students and faculty will begin using
the building this month. Supko has previously given more than $100,000 to
various projects at the University and continues to be an enthusiastic and
dedicated volunteer. She serves on the Board of Directors of the University
of Idaho Foundation, Chairs the Annual Giving Committee, and is a member of
the College of Education Advisory Council. Additional classroom naming
opportunities in the TLC are available. Please contact the Office of
Development for information at (208) 885-7069.

Take care, Moscow.

"What is objectionable, what is dangerous, about extremists is not that they
are extreme, but that they are intolerant. The evil is not what they say
about their cause, but what they say about their opponents."
