WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Hang on to any of the new State of Idaho quarters if you
can get them. They may wind up being worth much more than their face value
of 25 cents. Why? Because the U.S.Treasury announced today that it is
recalling all of the Idaho quarters which are part of its program featuring
quarters commemorating each state of the Union and its year of admission.
"We are recalling all the new Idaho quarters that were ecently irssued",
Treasury Under secretary Jack Shackleford said Monday. "This action is being
taken after numerous reports that the new Idaho quarters will not work in
parking meters, vending machines, pay phones, or other coin-operated
devices. "The problem lies in the unique design of the Idaho quarter, which
was created by a Boise State University graduate who was nominated by
several members of the Idaho Board of Education", Shackleford said.
"Apparently, the duct tape holding the two dimes and nickel together keeps
jamming the coin-operated devices." Members of the State Board were
unavailable for comment.
