This poem draws a correlation between feminism (what I like to refer to as
the "Sisterhood") and post-911 paranoia.

Sisters
Author: Jym Mooney
Tune: The Tarrier's Song
As I watched the towers crumble
On that Tuesday full of dread
A thousand thoughts and feelings
Went spinning through my head
But I am just a high school girl
I am not rich or strong
What can I do to help the world
Recover from such wrong?
And then I heard some Muslim girls
Who go with me to class
Were being rudely taunted
Hounded and harassed
Their headscarves marked them Muslim
And drew the hate and jeers
Of those who let their reason
Be clouded by their fears
I am your sister
And I'll stand by your side
You are my sister
And your scarf I'll wear with pride
If anyone is cruel to you
They'll have to answer to me too
For we are sisters
And cannot be denied
So I resolved to wear the scarf
Just like my Muslim friends
To show my solidarity
And try to make amends
For fools who rush to judgment
Instead of thinking issues through
And wrongly blame the many
For the actions of a few
I am your sister
And I'll stand by your side
You are my sister
And your scarf I'll wear with pride
If anyone is cruel to you
They'll have to answer to me too
For we are sisters
And cannot be denied
Yes I am just a high school girl
But I can take a stand
When I see the blameless targeted
I can offer them my hand
And we will work together
To find harmony and peace
For evil must be fought at home
As well as overseas
I am your sister
And I'll stand by your side
You are my sister
And your scarf I'll wear with pride
If anyone is cruel to you
They'll have to answer to me too
For we are sisters
And cannot be denied
