I seriously doubt that it is a virus.

Many e-mail programs allow the user to "request" a response e-mail for e-mail 
they have sent.  Outlook offers this function.  This "response" e-mail may be 
generated either when it is received by the addressee or when it is opened by 
the addressee.  In either case, once the response e-mail is generated, it is 
place in the Outbox for sending.
