To build on Wayne's example -

One acre of hemp produces as much pulp products (paper, etc.) as ten acres of 
timber.  Canada has legalized hemp for pulp products.  You can order hemp paper 
(along wth that distinctive "odor") from Canadian businesses.

The forrest industry here in the Nifty Fifty (as I like to refer to the US of 
A) have lobbied against legalization of hemp for pulp production for obvious 
reasons (pronounced "bottom line").
