Last week the Chicago Sun-Times reported the results of its examination
of the salaries of local union executives. Among its findings was that
Chicago Teachers Union President Deborah Lynch made about $111,000 a year.
That's not exactly scandalous, but Lynch had an interesting
justification for the amount she makes. "Our officers make what a teacher
would make, but for an 8-hour day and a 12-month year," she said.
Now, anyone who has ever written a word about teachers' salaries knows
the quickest way to fill your inbox with nastygrams is to state that
teachers have fewer workdays than most other professions. But Lynch goes
even further than that, implying they don't work an 8-hour day!
So, Chicago teachers, the quickest way to a six-figure salary is to work
as many hours as your union president.
