Robert:

Part of the Republican critique of federal government run programs was the
opinion that the private sector is more efficient and cost effective, that
government run programs are inherently wasteful and inefficient. It was not merely
to cut back on New Deal social entitlements in favor of local control for
efforts that can be done locally, leaving programs related to national defense,
etc., to continue in their inefficient ways. And assuming this, the
Republicans appear to contradict themselves significantly, when they support funding the
private sector with massive military related contracts, contracts that reveal
that indeed the private sector can be just as egregiously wasteful of tax
dollars as government run programs, as we have witnessed often in the past, and
recently with Halliburton in Iraq.

Also, the Republican agenda has run on the slogan of getting government off
the backs of Americans, yet with the Patriot Act and the operations of the
Department of Homeland Security, we are seeing a dramatic increase in the power of
the Federal government to interfere in the lives of law abiding American
citizens, under the banner of defense and waging a "War On Terror."

Whether the Patriot Act and the huge bureaucracy of the Department of
Homeland Security are "big government" programs of the sort that Republicans should,
if they were ideologically consistent, be opposing, is a matter of debate.
