Here's a neat little article on the differences between Tubes and
Transistors. The article was written in the early 70's by an audio
engineer and is mostly about recording sound, but still seems relevant
today.

Got this article off Slashdot (http://www.slashdot.org) and there was
a fair amount of blathering, with some interesting commentary on the
topic. You can read about that here:

Hey there-

There is a copy of "Lost In Space" at Hastings in Moscow, an SACD/CD
hybrid dual layer audiophile edition Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab disc
that is placed facing cover out in a special section for SACD and
DVD-Audio discs, but for some strange reason is under a shelf where it
reads "VHS Music Video." Hastings is a strange corporation. But this
disc has been sitting out in plain view for months at Hastings. This
disc will play in all CD players and also SACD capable DVD players.
It has two layers and the laser focuses to whatever layer is required.

This disc is made by Music Direct, a company I have bought from in
Chicago, that bought Mobile Fidelity after they went out of business.

SACD is Super Audio CD, Sony/Phillips new format, using the DVD disc
data storage system, to hold up to 5.1 channels of high resolution DSD
(direct stream digital one bit at a very high sampling rate) audio at
a much higher resolution (frequency response out to over 40 K, 18-20
bit equivalent) than CD. It is not a compressed format.

Some say it sounds fantastic, with the warmth of analog but all the
benefits of digital.

Ted
