Tom and Visionaries,
Tom writes:
"Since there will be activity on the UI campus commemorating Martin Luther
King Jr. Day (Monday, January 19, 2004), I have a question.
What activities have Christ Church and/or New Saint Andrews College
organized to commemorate this Martin Luther King Jr. Day? "
Tom, I cannot speak for either entity, although I have not heard of any
activities published abroad. But being (partly) Irish, I feel the urge to
partly answer your question with a few questions. And since you've asked
publicly, I'll ask publicly as well.
1) Is there any particular reason why you couldn't call Christ Church or
NSA directly? If this question, Rose's questions over the months, Bill's
question about a Credenda reference (not to mention the infamous Bucer's
rumor question) are anything to go by, one good way to the heart of the
matter (i.e. do research) is not to go directly to the source but toss a
question out on Vision 2020.
2) Should, in your opinion, either entity be commemorating this? If so,
what conclusions would you draw if they do not?
3) On Oct 31, 1517, Martin Luther King's (presumed) namesake posted his 95
theses, helping usher in the Reformation. This is considered a watershed
event in history and honored by many churches on Reformation Sunday, near
that time of year. Is there room on the calendar in this diverse community
to honor this date in European (ahhh, progressive Europe) history?
Naturally, the U of I probably would not, so as not to violate the
establishment clause. But how about the MCA? Are they planning anything in
honor of it?
Cheers,
David Douglas
