And I answer:
Well, no.  And that is, of course, the gist of our complaint.  Latah County 
does not at present require its public defenders to report the sort of 
statistics that would let us know whether or not we are being well served.  
How many cases go to trial?  How many are pled?  What kind of cases are 
pled?  What's the average negotiated sentence for, say, a guilty plea on 
simple check fraud?  For a first-time offender?  For a repeat offender?

Who knows what lurks in the hearts of men?  Until we get some detailed 
statistics, only the Shadow . . .

Professor Woolf adds:
