Visionaries:
The question is not whether young men do stupid things, I believe we all know
the answer is yes. And, while it is painful for parents (I dare say not a
single parent of those scamps had ever run an illegal casino themselves) to see
their children play the fool, it is unfortunately one of the less pleasant
sides of being a parent. Wise parents would insist that young men of that age
(on the verge of adulthood chronologically if not emotionally) take
responsibility for their actions. What thoughtful parent would be comfortable with the
fact that the guilty skated away while the innocent members of the church pay
for their miscreant behavior. And what kind of pastor and elders would want to
be involved with that kind of congregational robbery? Perhaps the kind who
have had their own hands in the till for less than Godly reasons?
The larger issue in my mind is how the *adults* in authority handled the
sorry affair. For example, why were tax exempt funds used in the pay off? Isn't
there a law against that? If Wilson Inc. cared at all about the failure of
Christian love why not let the young men dig into their own pockets - or at least
work off the debt to the church? The idea of the community of Saints is one
thing - but using community funds to pay off the crimes of certain Saints is
quite another.
Who could imagine that Ken Lay was alive and well in Moscow, masquerading as
a minister of the gospel?
How is it that some members loose their livelihood for failing to
"re-educate" their spouses, while the entire church pays for the debts for actual crimes
committed by others? Why is it that signing a human rights statement causes
economic loss for one person (who is not even a church member) while the
consequences of getting underaged kids drunk in order to rob them is not grounds for
excommunication? What kind of preferential treatment is this? A spanky
letter from the CEO - which, given the casino originators attitude, was probably a
source of great entertainment amongst them - seems inadequate. I would be
outraged if I were a member of Christ Church or CRE. What does this have to do
with righteous living?
What kind of leaders do you have that place a yoke like this on your
shoulders? And, are you "important" enough to Doug et al. to be rescued if you
"stumble" or, will you be shunned and left to bear the consequences on your *sins*?
Bear in mind, as I know you must, that the great majority of you will never
be in leadership positions - unless you offer a financial benefit to Wilson
Inc. Do you think Jesus selected His disciples on the criteria that Doug uses?
Good lord, people, show some backbone. Remember without the support of the
congregation Doug and the elders will be preaching to themselves and empty
chairs. There are many churches in this area who could speak to your spiritual
needs (and I don't mean Trinity Reformed which is so firmly in Wilson's pocket
it is known (as you all know) as the FOG - the Fellowship of Grievance. Boy,
there's I church I'd wish to be identified with!
Look around, instead for churches that have elders and pastors who actually
live by the gospel Wilson Inc claims to love.
Rose Huskey
Once you lose integrity everything else is easy.
