Dear Ben Merkle,
=20
I speak to you in truth and plainly. That is to say, no *funny* lines for=20
the benefit of Vision 2020 readers, and no intention of scoring *points* in=20
public discourse. Personally, I don't give a fig where you get your degrees,=
 or=20
how you get them. (On a private note, I would love having an advanced degree=
 (in=20
residence) from the University of Wales. Cardiff is a delightful city, and=20
there is an extraordinary inn/restaurant on the outskirts of Cardiff called=20=
the=20
Blue Whale that I love. It dates to the 13th century and the atmosphere is=20
unbelievable.) =20

My reason in drawing attention to your PhD program, is the astonishing=20
continuing criticism directed at Drs. Ramsey and Quinlan by you and your NSA=
=20
sidekicks. I believe the motive for your attacks (you in the collective) is=20=
based on=20
academic envy, fueled by the meager faculty attainments at NSA. The best=20
defense is, I suppose (in your mind), a good offensive. Of the twelve facul=
ty=20
members at NSA, one-third hold doctorates, one-third hold masters and one-th=
ird=20
hold bachelors degrees. This does not, by any judicious measure, represent=20=
an=20
intellectually rich or scholastically deep company with which to staff a=20
college. One-third of the faculty, (if one includes Doug), are related by m=
arriage=20
or blood to Wilson, Inc. Surely this is more than an improbable coincidence=
,=20
and it certainly speaks to the claim that nepotism, if not intellectual=20
talent, is alive and well at NSA. Thus, by questioning the credentials you s=
port,=20
it is my intent to draw attention to the obvious faculty deficits in your ow=
n=20
backyard. I am sorry in some measure that you are the current target =E2=
=80=93 be=20
assured that there is nothing personal in my choice. Frankly, I=E2=80=99d m=
uch rather=20
know the subject of Nate=E2=80=99s thesis at Saint Johns. Unfortunately, I w=
as unable to=20
find it on their list of published thesis. If, and I am assuming that by=20
Saint Johns he means the Great Books program from the institutes in Annapoli=
s or=20
Santa Fe, he received an M.A. it is my understanding that a thesis is=20
required. I would like to interlibrary loan it and read it myself.
=20
One of the particularly egregious issues with the Wilkins/Wilson book on=20
slavery, as I believe you understand on some level, is their painfully obvio=
us=20
failure to engage in actual scholarship. In the larger world non-university=20=
world=20
(outside Moscow and Pullman), the Wilson/Wilkins book may appear to have=20
credibility. Undoubtedly the names Wilson and Wilkins have a certain cache=20=
in=20
Reformed and Southern separatists circles, and by extension their *work* may=
 well=20
be considered legitimate. That is shameful - not to the folks who hold it in=
=20
some regard, but to those men who perpetuated the fraud. The fact that=20
neither man has received meaningful training in history pedagogy, historiogr=
aphy,=20
and research methodology is blatantly apparent to those who are fortunate en=
ough=20
to amble down a scholarly path. (I genuinely mean that. The opportunity for=20
advanced academic study with its concurrent luxury of intellectual growth is=
=20
surely not available to most people. Substituting a well-known last name or=
=20
leadership status in a faith or like-minded political community in the place=
 of=20
intellectual integrity is, in my mind, disgraceful. I choose the word=20
disgraceful deliberately =E2=80=93 behavior without social or spiritual gra=
ce. And herein=20
lies the problem.
=20
To found, operate, and claim scholastic legitimacy, and by legitimate I am=20
using the customary understanding of the word, that is, =E2=80=9Cconforming=20=
to accepted=20
rules and standards,=E2=80=9D Wilson Inc., needs more than a burning desire=
 to=20
inculcate a personal, limited world view on hero worshipping youngsters and=20=
their=20
parents. I could open Rose=E2=80=99s School of Veterinary Medicine based on=
 my=20
affection for dogs and horses and practical understanding of how to feed and=
 care for=20
them. I could announce that I didn't recognize governmental accreditation=20
because I didn't want government interference, and I could charge $6,000 a y=
ear=20
to the terminally stupid animal lovers who wanted to attend. But in the end=
,=20
all they would receive for their money and time would be my uniformed opinio=
ns=20
on animal care and not much else. No matter that I could produce endless=20
booklets on nutrition for nursing mares or satirical prose bleating on about=
 the=20
true meaning of bliss in a tail-wagging dog. Nonetheless, I would like to=20
think, that I lack the effrontery to dispute with faculty members at the WSU=
=20
School of Veterinary on issues of histology or infectious pathogens. That i=
s what=20
differentiates me (and frankly, most other citizens of Moscow) from Doug=20
Wilson et al. And that is why these endless debates continue.
=20
It is my seasoned opinion, that the emperor has no clothes and his minions=20
lose credibility in direct proportion to their defense of him and their=20
association with the institutions he founds and directs. The unhappy consequ=
ences flow=20
far beyond NSA. And in my mind are incalculably more important that the=20
limited drama of Doug plays Headmaster, Publisher, Author, or Grand PooBah.=20

In truth, Ben Merkle, what effect do you think the arrogant braying from=20
Wilson Inc. has on the Christian message? There is a reason that Doug draws=
 more=20
supporters into Moscow than from Moscow. Those of us who have taken the ti=
me=20
and energy to look closely at him are not convinced by the message, let alon=
e=20
the messenger. It is a source of continued bewilderment to me that despite=20
Doug's claimed desire to evangelize the Palouse, he single handedly by word,=
=20
deed, and attitude has done more to prevent that from happening than all the=
=20
so-called Intoleristas in Moscow.
=20
Rose Huskey
=20
P.S. In reference to Tom Hansen=E2=80=99s observation =E2=80=93 the followin=
g NSA faculty=20
members have slunk (? is that at word) across town to learn something at the=
=20
University of Idaho.
NSA Dean, Roy Attwood, was a faculty member, and I believe Communications=20
department chair, at the UI for many years
Douglas Jones anticipated finishing a B.A. in Latin in 2002 at UI. I wonder=
=20
if he is still anticipating it?
Ben Merkle, is trying to finish an M.A. English Lit. at UI
Natali Miller, finished a B.A. in Classical Studies in 2000
Christopher Schlect, a History Fellow at NSA, is trying to finish an MA in=20
history at UI
John Schwandt, NSA Fellow of Classical Language graduated from UI with a=20
B.L.Arch. in Landscape Architecture
Wes Struble, is a candidate for an M.S. in Instruction and Curriculum=20
Development at (you guessed it) UI.
Doug Wilson, BA and MA from UI =E2=80=93 at least there are no credibility p=
roblems=20
with his training
Gordon Wilson, B.S. Secondary Education Biology from UI.
In other words, two-thirds of the faculty can claim to have or apparently=20
wish to have a diploma from a UI.
