Dear Jerry Owen,
Can you help us understand exactly what the sin of racism is? Does it refer=
=20
to biological aspects of ethnicity? Does it refer to patronizing attitudes=20
towards those of a different ethnicity? In the Wilkins/Wilson book on slave=
ry,=20
we read =E2=80=9CThe Old South was a caste society, but not a compartmentali=
zed=20
society. There were specific roles for blacks and whites, and each =E2=80=
=9Cknew their place
=E2=80=9D as it were=E2=80=A6=E2=80=9Dp23. (quote marks around knew their p=
lace are from the=20
original text) What does that mean? What place was appropriate for a black=20=
woman in=20
a slave owning society of the South? What role was appropriate for a white,=
=20
propertied man? =20
Is it even remotely possible that Steve Wilkins has the vaguest insight into=
=20
why I, for example, believe him to be not only racist, but brazenly=20
unapologetic about it? It is my sense that even defenders of Southern slaver=
y would not=20
pretend that the =E2=80=9Cpeculiar institution=E2=80=9D was anything but rac=
e based. I=20
invite you to take a look at the Choice Slaves auction flyer on Tom Hansen=
=E2=80=99s Not On=20
The Palouse website. Every single human being for sale, including children,=
=20
are described first by the color of their skin. Southern slavery was racist=
,=20
first, last, and always. And so are the unhappy buffoons who defend it.
Rose Huskey
