Visionaries, Linda, et al.
OK, OK I'm a MORON already!!
Or maybe I'll go for not enough coffee yet, there's got to be SOME excuse for my totally misunderstanding the guy.
Anyhow Linda, if it helps any, you're starting out with at least 1 vote in the plus column--MINE.
     Redfacedly,

Dear Visionaries,

Imagine my surprise to find all this waiting for me when I got back to the office after a full day of teaching at WSU!

I accepted the lighthearted part of the "welcome to the campaign stuff" because I called Bill Weed, the owner of the station, and got the real story. To test the hypothesis that he has never agreed with me, Bill and I agreed to go to lunch when he returned from three days at the Coug's Notre Dame game and related festivities.

This morning, Bill, the owner, mentioned the comment, explained himself and gave himself a "voluntary suspension for three days," to coincide with his trip to see the Cougs beat the Fighting Irish. When he gets back, we'll look for and probably find some common ground.

Sooooo, no First Amendment problem here, just a little difficulty in keeping up with the station owner's patter and what is now a joke that is beginning to get epic proportions. Dale's got it right: we can tell what news and what's not. Folksy comments will remain, you can count on it.

KQQQ is one of the few stations with roving tape recorders on the Palouse that actually does news. I can take the commentary and thrive on debate.

That's part of the reason I'm running: more dialogue, not less.

All the best,

Linda

(I did wince at the adjectival phrase in the subject line... Since mortality got me by the throat, I've mellowed even more or to quote myself (which I can't resist every once in awhile), "I am taking every opportunity to tell people how much they mean to me and what gifts they are to my life.")

Tim,

It's perfectly clear to a thinking audience what is news and what is commentary. One thing that I enjoy about KQQQ is that it provides both the news and their off-hand comments -- whether I agree with them or not.

I'm concerned that their announcers will feel like they are walking on egg shells now and cannot make their "folksy" comments any more.

Best,
Dale

Visionaries,
I occasionally listen to KQQQ in the mornings. I was doing so today when one of the co-hosts of the morning local news show brought up "the comment"-- his mention on yesterday's show that he had never agreed with Linda Pall.

He said the comment was merely a statement of fact--that he disagreed with her politically. He wasn't insulting or defamatory, just "I don't agree."

This news show has, at least in the past, been a mix of local news and comments. The hosts often mention personal anecdotes about their lives, opinions, golf games, and etc. They often talk about politics as well.
Nothing too detailed, just comments now and then. I've agreed some of the time and disagreed some of the time, but the fact that these fellows have opinions never bothered me. There's an old cliche reminding us that we all have them.

Well, to make a long story short, the fellow who mentioned that he disagreed with Pall has been suspended from his job at the station for three days.

     Huh? Come again?

A station that devotes most of its broadcast day to political talk suspends this guy for simply stating an opinion?

I hope that's not what the Pall supporters who called and emailed the station had in mind when they complained.
Unlike the news co-host, I have often agreed with Ms. Pall and have even cast a vote her way on occasion. But I certainly DON'T agree that disagreeing with her should mean suspension.
I doubt if Ms. Pall does either
