Something is very odd with today's Daily News.
Both Editors (Nathan Alford and Steve McClure) have know since last Saturday
that the 9th Annual History Conference has nothing to do with slavery. They
bit deeply into a hook set for them by a local Stambler-wanna-be.
Yet, they have not written a retraction in their Accuracy Matters column.
Back on 9 August 2003, Nathan Alford wrote:
But there's one more essential ingredient: credibility and trust with you,
the reader. All else is secondary. It's an intangible that we work hard to
earn every day. At the core of every successful newspaper is the unwavering
commitment to an accurate and complete news report, free of bias and
opinion.
And today they ran a Letter to the Editor from Martha Foster where she is
perplexed that such a topic has been chosen for the upcoming conference. We
are all still perplexed, since it's factually incorrect.
Well, imagine Martha's surprise when she finds out
a) that it is not the topic,
b) that the Daily News chose to publish her letter anyway (more chum in
the water?), and
c) that the Editors could have published a retraction in Monday's paper
(or Tuesday's) and chose not to.
Alford continues: "At the Daily News, we're conscious of our obligation. And
it's healthy to remind ourselves and you every so often that accuracy is an
absolute priority."
Yet the article by Bacharach was completely written before the interview
with Wilson ever took place (was turned in by 5:00 and the interview started
at 2:00). And all of the material that he presented to her (see:

disregarded.
If a paper runs an article with half the truth, and publishes it so that
people will be intentionally mislead (as Martha Foster was), does that meet
Alford's desire that: "Anything less than a 100 percent accurate report has
the potential to undermine our most valuable resource - credibility."
Yet, to bolster the paper's "credibility," they run a front-page article
based on an anonymous flier that was designed to be slanderous and
intentionally mislead the town.
Hmmm, let's see: anonymous flier, factually incorrect data, slanderous
material, intentionally misleading material, ... Now that meets Alford's
goal of a paper with credibility for you!
But, hey! It generates sales for the paper.
So tell me again, how does one move up in the Journalism world?
