Visioneers:

I like history as much as the next person, but Vision 2020 was designed =
for talking about OUR community and its future. How 'bout a little =
discussion about the upcoming City Council elections? There are nine =
candidates running, 3 for the 2-year seat and 6 for the 4-year seats. =
Citizens get to do a lot of voting this time around--and need to be =
prepared to make sound choices so that 150 years from now, the =
discussion on V2020 will be about how far-sighted we were in 2003. =20

Here's a start:

Imagine a candidate for City Council who meets you for the first time =
one weekend, asks you as many questions as you ask him and listens to =
your answers. When he sees you again the following weekend, he not only =
introduces you by first and last name to others and relates what you had =
discussed, but has done some additional research on the topic in the =
meantime.=20
Imagine also that he listens equally well to others with different =
points of view and considers various sides of issues. Imagine him taking =
a long-term view of those issues (perhaps 100's of years--something well =
beyond the next election), working in an open and conciliatory manner =
and with a sense of humor. Also imagine that he is admired both by =
colleagues and students for his enthusiasm and his skill at resolving =
conflicts.

Imagine no more! John Dickinson is the candidate described above and he =
deserves your vote on November 4.=20

Or how about this:

I've known Nancy Chaney for 15 years. I have interacted with her on a =
variety of levels in a variety of settings. I have seen her in many =
roles and in each she was interested, effective, well-spoken, calm, =
competent, confident and had an energizing effect on me. She is a =
thoughtful, capable person and would do her homework on issues. I =
believe she would be a voice of reason on our City Council.

Please vote for Nancy Chaney on November 4.

The election is three weeks from today. Let's discuss the issues that =
face Moscow's future.
