Dear Visionaries:
    Here's something for your consideration of the actual condition of =
slaves during the Civil War.

    "I was born in 1851, de [sic] sixteenth of November, on de =
Occoneechee plantation, owned by Marse John Norwood and his good wife =
Annie. And when I say "good" I mean just dat, for no better people ever =
lived den my Marse John and Mis' Annie.
    One thing dat made our marse and mistis so good was de way dey =
brought up us niggers [sic]. We was called to de Big House and taught de =
Bible and dey was Bible readin's every day. We as taught to be good men =
amd women and to be honest. Marse never sold any of us niggers. But when =
his boys and girls got married he would give dem some of us to take with =
dem.
    Marse never allowed us to be whipped. One time we had a white =
overseer and he whipped a field hand called Sam Norwood, till de blood =
comes. He beat him so bad dat de other niggers had to take him down to =
de river and wash de blood off. When Marse come and found dat out he =
sent dat white man off and wouldn't let him stay on de plantation =
overnight. He just wouldn' have him round de place no longer. He made =
Uncle Whitted de overseer' cause he was one of de oldest slaves he had =
good nigger.
    When any of us niggers got sick, Mis Aniie would come down to de =
cabin to see us. She brung de best wine, good chicken and chicken soup =
and everything else she had at de Big House dat she thought we like, and =
she done everything she could to get us well again.
    Marse John never worked us after dark. We worked in de day and had =
de nights to play games and have singin's. We never cookd on a Sunday. =
Everything we ate on dat day was cooked on Saturday. Dey wasn't light in =
de cook stoves or fireplaces in de Big House or cabins neither. =
Everybody rested on Sunday. De tables was set and de food put out to =
eat, but nobody cut any wood and dey wasn't no other work done on dat =
day. Mammy Beckie was my grandmammy and she toted de keys to de pantry =
and smokehouse, and her word went with Marse John and Miss Annie.
    Marse John was a great lawyer and when he went to Pittsboro and =
other places to practice, if he was to stay all night, Mis' Annie had my =
mammy sleep right in bed with her, so she wouldn't be afraid.
    Marse and Mistis had three sons and three daughters. De oldest son =
was not able to go to war. He had studied so hard dat it had affected =
his mind, so he stayed at home. De second son, named Albert, went to war =
and was brought back dead with a bullet hole throught his head. Dat =
liked to have killed Marse John and Mis' Annie. Dey was three girls, =
named, Mis' Maggie, Mis' Ella Bella, and Mis' Rebena....
    After de War was over Marse John let Pappy have eighteen acrese of =
land for de use of two of his boys for a year. My pappy made a good crop =
of corn, wheat, and other food on his land."

  Doug Wilson has furnished us with many evidences that he is acquainted =
with black people (not that we asked). Unfortunately, he could not =
furnish us with any evidence that he didn't write and publish a pamphlet =
which reflects fondly on the good old days of the antebellum South, =
Christian civilization at its most refined pitch in American history. =
You know, when a white man could purchase, brand, whip, rape, breed, and =
profit from the sale of his own children, while serving as an elder in a =
Presbyterian church.

  What possible purpose could such a tract serve *except* to pander to =
the pervasive racism of our region? I await a similar pamphlet =
defending the high value and respect the Nazis had for motherhood.

last day.=20
    Because God
>hates it, so do I. Racial animosity and the more =

    (superficially) benign
>racial vainglory are both loathsome. =
God=20
    created from one blood every
>nation of men to dwell on all =
the face=20
    of the earth (Acts 17:26). This
>means that we are all =
cousins, all=20
    of us created in the image of God. I
>say "created" as a =
convinced=20
    creationist, and as one who wants nothing to
>do with the =
racialist=20
    implications of the theory of evolution. If
>evolution is =
true (which=20
    it isn't), and if evolutionary progress is a
>coherent =
concept (which=20
    it isn't either), then how is it possible to
>escape the =
implication=20
    that one race of men can progress faster (depending
>on =
environment)=20
    than another race? That is what Darwin taught, but if you =
>are=20
    looking for an institution that teaches both premise one and premise =
>two, you will have to look at places like the University of =
Idaho,=20
    and not
>at any educational institution that I have anything =
to do=20
    with.
>
>In short, I am willing to place our record on =
race=20
    relations (and our
>lived-out racial mix) against any local =
so-called=20
    progressive group. If
>you really
>want an example of =
Little=20
    Norway you will not be able to come to Christ
>Church for it. =
Why not=20
    look instead at the candidates for city council
>endorsed by =
the=20
    Moscow Civic Association? I am afraid that there are many =
>who would=20
    be cheered up considerably if I were a racist, and they would=20
>really, really, really like it to be true. But alas, it is =
not. And=20
    so my
>counsel to them is to go yell up a different rain=20
    spout.
>
>Anyone who is interested is certainly welcome =
to=20
    register for this year's
>history conference, and =
registration forms=20
    are available from Christ
>Church. As you are filling it out, =
you may=20
    notice that there is no little
>box to check for your racial =
or=20
    ethnic background. You see, we don't care.
>Can the same be =
said by=20
    those registering for classes at the UI?
>
>Oh, and by =
the way,=20
    in response to a column of a few weeks back, we are
>not =
interested=20
    in burning people at the stake in Friendship Square.=20
    =
Sheesh.
>
>

______________________________________=
