There have been many such signs, although they were phrased somewhat
differently:
"Let the Inspections work!" "Inspections, not bombs!" "Let the inspectors
do their jobs!"
Most of the world agreed that inspections were working. It's just that a
few countries decided that no degree of compliance on the side of the
Iraqis was sufficient, and every time the Iraqis accepted new conditions,
the bar was raised.
"You have to let the inspectors back in, or we'll bomb you!"
OK, bring the inspectors in.
"You have to produce a massive report on short notice!"
OK, here's your report.
"You have to allow U2 spy planes!
Granted.
"You have to prove you have no Weapons of Mass Destruction!"
I thought the inspectors were doing that.
They can't; you have to prove a negative!"
"You have to prove it in five weeks, no, five days, no, five minutes!"
"Saddam has to get out, and even if he does, we're marching in with the
troops!"
It reminds me of a historical anecdote. When Maria Theresia ascended the
throne of Austria, Prussian king Friedrich the Great decided that a nation
led by womenfolk would be a pushover militarily. He jumped on his horse
and was riding out of Prussia with his army, when he turned around and
yelled at his diplomats, "Find an excuse!"
