Visionaries:

Recently our community has given much thought to issues that divide us. =20
However, there have been moments of shining clarity, and I write about one o=
f=20
them. As you know, David Irving, the infamous Holocaust denier, and unflagg=
ing=20
defender of the Third Reich was scheduled to speak in Moscow on December 16,=
=20
2003. His speaking arrangement had been made through a third party who rese=
rved=20
dinner for 30 and a conference room at the Mark IV. The staff and managemen=
t=20
of the Mark IV were not told that Mr. Irving was the honored guest and dinne=
r=20
speaker. When they learned they canceled the reservation and closed the=20
restaurant for the evening rather than provide a platform for Mr. Irving=E2=
=80=99s hateful=20
speech. =20
=20
Many of us are reluctant to speak out against intolerance, particularly if w=
e=20
don=E2=80=99t feel the impact of hatred or bigotry in our own lives. It is=20=
rare that=20
a business would choose to bypass substantial revenue for conscience sake. =20
In this holiday season let us commend, and honor (and stop by for a meal) th=
e=20
Mark IV staff and management, for this act of sensitivity, decency and coura=
ge.=20
 Their example symbolically kindles the candles of Hanukah and celebrates th=
e=20
Light of Christ on the Palouse. Thank you Mark IV.
=20

=20
P.S. If possible, try to be as generous as you can when tipping at the Mark=
=20
IV. Lets not forget that that the servers who didn't work last night lost=20
salary + tips. It would be a gracious way to show our appreciation for thei=
r=20
sacrifice. =20
