I should be pleased to have earned the credentials and acquired the academic=
=20
skills of Drs. Quinlan and Ramsey. I recognize that I have not. It is=20
perhaps a measure of your own scholarly acumen, Doug, that instead of respon=
ding to=20
their textual criticism you focus on a minor typo, in the footnotes, wasn't=20
it? Your response to them can only be understood in the context of bush-lea=
gue=20
antics. Despite Dr. Attwood=E2=80=99s =E2=80=9Calleged=E2=80=9D misquote in=
the DN, surely, Doug,=20
you would not content that your booklet on slavery is a scholarly work? If=20=
so,=20
then by what standard?
=20
To other issues . . .=20
=20
Doug says:
=E2=80=9CFirst, Rose simply made up the stuff about making a stink =E2=80=
=98about the=20
church,=E2=80=99 and questioning =E2=80=98decisions of church leadership.=
=E2=80=99 That was not in=20
the column at all.=E2=80=9D
=20
Making it up, am I? I quote to you from Volume 15, Issue 3: Femina of=20
Credenda Agenda, specifically from the article headed Submission, by Nancy W=
ilson. =20
The emphasis (in italics) is my own.=20
http://www.credenda.org/issues/15-3femina.php
=20
=E2=80=9CBut what about when the husband is in sin? This is a very important=
issue.=20
What if the husband has adopted a wrong attitude and is heading in the wrong=
=20
direction? Is a wife obligated to go along? It all depends. I have often bee=
n=20
saddened that we don't see more Abigails in the church today. She was not af=
raid=20
to call her husband a fool and to make arrangements behind his back without=20
his permission. God blessed her abundantly for intervening in this way. She=20=
did=20
not stay home waiting for David to attack her household calling herself a=20
submissive wife. She recognized that her husband was acting the part of a fo=
ol,=20
and she exercised wisdom and prudence by going to David herself.=20
If a man is acting foolishly, a woman is foolish to go along quietly. Of=20
course this requires great wisdom. I am not advocating giving wives license=20=
to=20
disobey in a willy-nilly fashion. That is what I am objecting to in the=20
paragraphs above. But there are times when a godly wife should beseech her h=
usband not=20
to act in a foolish manner. It may involve doctrine. Perhaps she is alarmed=20
that he is being attracted to heretical ideas, whether it is "openness theol=
ogy"=20
or Roman Catholicism. She should speak to him respectfully about this, but=20
letting him know she cannot follow him there. If she belongs to a godly chur=
ch,=20
her elders would support her in this. Perhaps he is plotting to create some=20
kind of stink in the church. Abigail would not stand for it. A good Christia=
n=20
wife should go to the elders and ask them how she can be a good church membe=
r=20
and a good wife at the same time. She should not simply stand by, hoping tha=
t=20
her husband will do the right thing. Nor should she just accept anything her=
=20
husband does as though he is infallible. If a husband is bad-mouthing his el=
ders,=20
his pastor, or his friends, a godly woman should refuse to go along. She=20
should speak to him privately first, but if he is not receptive, she should=20=
go to=20
her pastor or elders and seek their advice. =E2=80=A6..A wife is to be a hel=
per to her=20
husband not a blind follower, and this sometimes includes going past him to=20
get help. God blessed Abigail when she did this.=E2=80=9D
=20
Perhaps you don=E2=80=99t understand this instructive article as a directive=
to=20
justify a church-sanctioned, in-home intelligence gathering apparatus, but I=
do. =20
(In view of the content it is unlikely that it was written and published=20
without your approval.) While I find it repulsive that you hold your faith c=
ommunity=20
hostage for your financial support through required tithing (and indirectly=20
through your assorted schools, tapes, books, conferences, etc.) I am beyond=20
disgust that you seek to stifle intellectual dissent, freedom of conscience,=
and=20
freedom of speech by enlisting the wives of your parishioners as informants.=
=20
Abigails, my bum =E2=80=93 you=E2=80=99re looking for stool pigeons. YIKES!=
!!

PS Let=E2=80=99s not forget the end of the saga of Abigail. After placatin=
g David=20
with food offerings to avoid David=E2=80=99s attack on her home, she returns=
home to=20
her recalcitrant husband. After telling him (Nabal) what she has done =E2=
=80=9Chis=20
heart died within him and he became as a stone. And about ten days later th=
e LORD=20
smote Nabal; and he died=E2=80=A6then David sent and wooed Abigail, to make=20=
her his=20
wife. =E2=80=A6and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wi=
fe.=E2=80=9D =20
