Tom asks:
"Which is more acceptable to you, Ms. Huskey? Pitying those women and ch=
ildren =20
that were forced into harm's way and died as a result? Or packing up the=
=20
belongings of three or four more dead soldiers to be sent to their widows=
?"
Why should one of these situations have to be more acceptable than the ot=
her? Are both not equally tragic? I don't want to have to pity dead Ira=
qi women and children *OR* pack up the belongings of dead soldiers. This=
, as Sunil has already said, was a war of choice, not chance. It's beyon=
d argument to declare that Saddam Hussein is responsible for putting his =
people in harm's way; of course he is. He's responsible for brutalizing =
them and terrorizing them. What we're responsible for is choosing to res=
pond militarily. We're like the cops in a hostage situation who have mad=
e the decision to end negotiations and go in guns drawn. When the hostag=
es wind up dead, sure, it's ultimately Saddam's fault, but that's no comf=
ort to the relatives of the slain or the poor cop with his finger on the =
trigger.
