'Downspout diverters' may be used to fill a rain barrel. I'm going to put
one in using a 'fragrant' olive barrel from TriState. If that works well I
will probably gang several barrels together for plant watering and thermal
mass in a future backyard greenhouse. For front-of-house use I'd like to use
a whiskey barrel like those sold at Stookey's

Enviro Energy sells a 150 gallon above ground rainbarrel
(http://www.enviroenergy.com/rainbarrel.htm) and there are some neat looking
ones at http://www.composters.com/docs/rainbarrels.html.

Real Goods lists some books on the subject:

Rainwater Harvesting book

I'm sure Book People can get these for you, if they don't have them already.

I was wondering if there was some way to channel that [rain]water into an
above gound cistern for use for watering flower and vegtable gardens and
washing the car and such like stuff?
